The Challenge
Building 48 at IWM Duxford required full roof replacement to address ageing materials, asbestos-containing components, and structural deterioration. As a Grade II listed building within a live operational site, the project demanded strict control measures, careful coordination with adjacent occupied buildings, and full compliance with heritage and conservation requirements. Managing licensed asbestos removal alongside sensitive roofing works presented a complex logistical and safety challenge.
Our Solution
ECMS delivered a carefully planned programme combining licensed asbestos removal with specialist heritage roofing works. Detailed, site-specific RAMS were developed in close collaboration with the client to ensure safe delivery in a live environment.
The roof was fully stripped, with asbestos cement materials safely removed under controlled conditions, including enclosed scaffolding, air monitoring, and fibre suppression measures. Following exposure of the roof structure, extensive timber decay was addressed through replacement battens and installation of a breathable membrane.
New Welsh County Bugail slates were sourced to match the original specification, with ridge and corner tiles reinstated to conservation standards. Lime mortar repairs, gutter cleaning, and minor lead works were completed to ensure long-term performance.
