ECMS is now a Certified B Corporation. We were assessed and certified by B Lab Global on 10 July 2026, and the certification runs to July 2029.
It is a milestone we have been working towards since 2021, and one we are genuinely pleased about, because unlike most things a company can put on its website, this one was verified by somebody else.
What B Corp certification actually measures
B Corp certification assesses a business across five areas: governance, workers, community, environment and customers. It is not a statement of intent and it is not a pledge. It is an independent assessment against a published standard, with evidence required for the answers, and it has to be renewed rather than awarded once and kept.
That distinction matters more than it might sound. Most sustainability and social value claims in facilities management are self-declared. A supplier writes them, and a client either believes them or does not. B Corp is one of the few things in this sector that a procurement or ESG team can check independently, which is precisely why we went after it.
What we changed to get there
The assessment looks at how a business actually operates, so most of the work was operational rather than presentational.
- Fair pay. We committed to the Real Living Wage and have been extending it across our contracts, which in a sector that competes hard on price is a commercial decision as much as an ethical one.
- Training and progression. Our staff training programme runs across the business, including for operatives who in much of this industry receive very little.
- Governance. We formed a Sustainability and Ethics Committee in 2022 to give these decisions somewhere to sit other than good intentions.
- Supply chain. We began an ethical audit programme across our supply chain in 2025, on the basis that our standards are not worth much if the people we buy from do not share them.
- Environment. We have held Planet Mark accreditation since 2021, now in our fifth year, alongside ISO 14001. Our fleet is transitioning to electric and we have targets for landfill and emissions published on our ESG page.
None of that happened quickly, and none of it was done for the certificate. The certificate is the confirmation that it was done.
What it means if you buy facilities services from us
For most of our clients the practical value is in three places.
Tenders and social value scoring. Public sector frameworks and a growing number of private ones score social value explicitly. B Corp certification, Real Living Wage commitment and a documented training programme are the sort of evidence those scoring matrices are looking for, and we can supply the documentation rather than the assertion.
ESG and sustainability reporting. If you report on your own supply chain, a certified supplier is easier to account for than an uncertified one. We can provide the underlying data rather than a paragraph of marketing copy.
Supply chain assurance. Facilities services involve people working in your building, often out of hours and often unsupervised by you. How a contractor treats those people is your risk as well as ours. Certification is one way of demonstrating that the answer has been examined by somebody independent.
What is next
Certification is not the end of the programme. We hold targets for a substantially electric fleet and zero waste to landfill by 2030, the removal of single-use plastics from our cleaning operation by 2027, and Net Zero across Scopes 1 and 2 and our key Scope 3 emissions by 2035. Those are published, dated and measurable, which is the only way targets are worth anything.
B Corp certification itself is renewable. Ours runs to July 2029, at which point we will have to demonstrate again that the standards have been maintained rather than allowed to slip after the certificate arrived.
